(Retina Display MacBook Pro -- 13' Left, 15'. Like their predecessors, the 13-Inch 'Late 2013' models have dual core. Two Thunderbolt 2 ports. Higher than 1080p HD screen. • Cons Glossy screen. Ethernet requires adapter. Only upgradeable at time of order. • Bottom Line The Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013) uses Intel's Haswell-based Core i5 processor to give power users a system that can last over 11 hours under continuous use and still process graphics and scientific tasks quickly. It's $500 less expensive than last year's model, yet more than earns its title as our latest Editors' Choice for high-end ultraportable laptops. The Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013) uses Intel's Haswell-based Core i5 processor to give power users a system that can last almost 12 hours under continuous use, weighs just over three pounds, and still process graphics and scientific tasks quickly. The MacBook Pro 13-inch is a prime competitor to the high-end ultrabooks that come with Windows 8/8.1 and have higher than 1080p HD resolution screens. If you're okay with switching to or using a Mac, it's one of the better choices in this price range. It's $500 less expensive than last year's model, yet more than earns its title as our latest Editors' Choice for high end ultraportable laptops. Design and Features On first glance, the MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013) looks identical to the previous version, the ($1,999). However, if you actually pull out a set of calipers, you'll see that the 0.71 by 12.35 by 8.62 inch (HWD) system has become thinner by 0.04 inches (vs. 0.75 inch thick). The aluminum and glass system has become a smidge lighter as well, down to 3.37 pounds from 3.57 pounds. Not earth-shattering by any means, but the anything that makes an ultraportable notebook more portable is welcome in our eyes. The chassis is still mostly milled aluminum, with the familiar Apple matte silver finish. It sits squarely between the ultra-thin consumer grade (but battery life monster) at $1,099, and the monster performance professional desktop replacement at $1,999. The backlit chiclet style keyboard is comfortable to use, as is the wide multi-touch trackpad. Much has been written about touch screens and why Windows 8 and 8.1 really need one to be useful. This is not the case on the MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013) and its Mac brethren. The reason a touch screen isn't necessary is because OS X 10.9 Mavericks and apps written for OS X aren't optimized for touch screens. Sure, there's an iOS-like Launchpad app pre-loaded, but many users can use the MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013) for years and never open it. While they won't necessarily support as many functions as Microsoft Office, it's a nice thing that all new Macs come with iWork (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) and iLife (iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand). Contrast this with high-end ultrabooks and ultraportables like the ($1,399.99) and ($1,449.99), both of which lack Office aside from the free downloadable starter (a.k.a., limited use) version. At least the Samsung Book 9 Plus comes with Adobe Photoshop Elelments to go along with its higher than 1,080p screen. Speaking of higher than 1080p, the screen on the MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013) has the same brilliant 13.3-inch 2,560 by 1,600 resolution IPS panel, as previously seen on the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display). Higher than 1080p screens allow creative pro users the ability to work on raw 1080p HD video and pictures at full resolution while still giving you space around the image for tool bars, status indicators, and other program windows.
